Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)
Sickle Cell disease is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin molecule within the red blood cell, which causes the blood cell to change shape from a disc into a crescent, or sickle shape. As a result, it is not effective in transporting oxygen and can cause extremely painful and dangerous blockages in blood vessels.
our mission
A support group >
The Sickle Circle of Manitoba passionately advocates for the inclusion of Sickle Cell Disease in Manitoba's Newborn Screening program, striving to ensure early diagnosis. We educate patients, families, and healthcare professionals, aiming for standardized care. Additionally, we actively support the SCD community and work to break down social barriers.
our programs
Andrea’s Angel Walk
One of our annual flagship events is Andrea's Angel Walk, a 5k walk/run named in honor of Andrea Ndukwu. This event is dedicated to raising awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), a rare blood disorder affecting red blood cells' ability to provide oxygen throughout the body. Despite being the #1 inherited blood disorder, SCD patients often face significant barriers to care.
